November
The Other Guys is a buddy cop action movie starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. And this is one of the worst buddy cop movies ever made. This movie is supposed to be a satire, allegedly, but I don't get it. Maybe it's too subtle, or I am too incompetent to understand it. In either case, I didn't like it one bit. I like Mark Wahlberg, and I wanted to like this movie, but I didn't. I ended up hating it. It is unbelievably unfunny and dumb. The plot is clichéd and uninteresting. Supposedly, this movie was misunderstood, and people didn't get its clever satire or something. First of all, I don't believe that. What I think really happened was that they made a lousy movie, and when people didn't like it, they tried to shield themselves from criticism by saying that the film was too clever for people. It's like you make a terrible and unfunny joke, and people don't laugh. You try to silence the detractors by saying that other people are too dumb to get it. Not only it's disingenuous, but also it's offensive. But let's just entertain this flimsy argument, and let's assume that people were too stupid to get the movie. That is still their fault and doesn't let them off the hook for its failure. If you want to make a movie that only a few people will get cause it's too "smart" for the general audience, then go make an indie movie, not a summer blockbuster with a star-studded cast. Everyone knows that summer blockbusters have a broad appeal, and generally, everyone gets it.
The Anchorman
The Anchorman is an anti-comedy movie, It was marketed as a comedy movie, but I couldn't find anything remotely resembling humor. This is one of the most painfully unfunny and cringe-inducing movies I have ever watched. It is remarkably unfunny. Not one joke in this movie is funny. It's almost impressive how painfully unhumorous this movie is. Maybe they aimed to make a movie to tell aspiring filmmakers how not to make a comedy movie. I don't know.
Geek Charming is a high school teen drama movie starring Haley from Modern Family aka Sarah Hyland. This is a very mediocre movie. It is impressively unimpressive. It is the very definition of mediocre. The actors did an okay job. Most actors in the movie are in their teens, so you can't expect them to act like Daniel Day-Lewis. The plot is like every teen drama movie, clichéd and formulaic. The cinematography is actually not good despite it being a Disney movie. Disney certainly doesn't have budget concerns, but still, they didn't put much effort into it. Maybe cause it's a TV movie, but again Mean Girls 2 premiered on the Disney Channel the same year, and that movie has far better cinematography than this movie. Maybe they didn't believe that there was any merit in this movie, and I can see why.
Bridge to Terabithia
Bridge to Terabithia is a fantasy drama movie starring Josh Hutcherson, AnnaSophia Robb, and Zooey Deschanel. The movie primarily focuses on the relationship between Jesse and Leslie. It seemed like just another silly kid's movie until the death of Lesley. It comes out of nowhere. What happens is Jesse is at the museum hanging out and having a good time, and then he comes home and suddenly finds out that Lesley died. We don't even see her dead body or anything or see how she died. She just dies randomly. Her death is given to us by exposition, but it works. Usually, exposition doesn't work, but here it works brilliantly. It feels more tragic than if they had shown her body. Another reason behind its effectiveness is shock; it just blindsides you. One minute it is just about kids doing silly things, and boom, the lead character dies. It feels jarring cause of the stark change in the tone. Children's cinema falls on the extreme end of light-hearted tone, and death of children falls at the extreme end of somber tone. This stark change in tone never happens. Just think of a tragic children's story. That scene was the most memorable part of the movie. I wouldn't have liked this movie that much without that scene.
The story is simple. Lesley is the new girl who opens up the introverted kid Jesse and takes him on crazy adventures. The opposite personalities of Lesley and Jess make their friendship compelling. Lesley is a tomboy. She wears boy's clothes and has masculine interests. She is vibrant and full of life. She is the kind of person you would want as a friend. She lives life on happy mode and betters the life of her friends by extension. Lesley is among my favorite fictional characters. Lesley is also the main character in this movie, and the best thing about the movie. Maybelle, Jess's little sister, was the second-best thing in this movie. She is very cute and charming. Her innocence is very endearing. Jess's character was underwhelming and unremarkable. Even a side character named Janice had a more compelling character than Jess. She has a redemption arc in this movie. She starts from a cruel, mean bully to a sympathetic troubled girl with a tragic backstory. You can tell how good a movie is by seeing how remarkable the side characters are. Excellent movies have not only fabulous primary characters but also have memorable secondary and cameo characters. Take Uncle Ben from Spider-Man. His entire screen time is less than 15 minutes, but still, he is one of the most popular movie characters of all time.
Juno
Juno is a high school drama movie starring Ellen Page, Jason Bateman, and Jennifer Garner. The film is about teenage pregnancy, which is invariably unwanted. This movie shows how the mother-to-be, her family, and others connected to Juno change course after this bombshell gets dropped. Teenage pregnancy is as extremely common as spousal cheating. Obviously, the topic of this movie is very relatable, which is the driving factor behind this movie's success and popularity. Other than that, the movie is exceptionally mediocre and bland. The feminist undertones are all over the place, which I cannot stand. Also, the lead character is unreasonably foul-mouthed and combative. This behavior doesn't make you sassy; instead, it makes you a jerk.
There's Something About Mary
There's something about Mary is a romantic comedy movie starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz. And this is, without any doubt, one of the funniest movies that I've watched. It is delightful to watch from start to the finish. Cameron Diaz was on the top of her game here. Diaz was in her prime and hitting her stride around this movie's release. It is just very, very good. The writing is top-notch. All the actors gave a brilliant performance here. Even the secondary characters were humorous and excellent. The cinematography is also exquisite. This movie has all the ingredients needed to make a good rom-com; that's why this movie belongs to the hall of fame of romcoms.
There's Something About Mary was remade in Bollywood as Deewane Huey Paagal.
The Sweetest Thing
The Sweetest Thing is a romantic comedy movie starring Cameron Diaz. This is one of those movies that features a bigshot actor but is a very low budget and low effort. Even actors' fans don't know about these sorts of movies. These movies just fly under the radar. These movies garner a very small audience and are quickly forgotten like they never existed. I call these types of movies; filler movies.
Now, Let's talk about the movie. Diaz is absolutely amazing in this movie. The story is not very good. Not like, they tried and failed type 'Not Good,' but they never tried type 'Not Good.' The movie overall is clichéd and lackluster.
Clueless is a teen drama movie starring Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd. Supposedly, it was a very popular movie at the time of its release; I don't understand why. This movie is nothing more than a glorified fashion show. The story of this movie comes second to the wardrobe and funky clothes of the lead actors. However, it is primarily popular among teen girls, and they don't have the best record when it comes to cinema. The most infamous example is, of course, Twilight. If teen girls are crazy about something, you can confidently say it is trash, the bottom-of-the-barrel stuff. The story was so weak and flimsy that it barely cut it as a story. We know nothing about the characters. We weren't told what makes these characters tick or their motivations and goals. We know nothing about their personality. I would say it was a bad movie, but it barely cuts it as a movie.
Night At The Museum
Night on the Museum is a fantasy comedy movie Starring Owen Wilson, Robin Williams, and Ben Stiller. The movie has a star-studded cast, as mentioned above, but still, they fail to add any substance to this useless movie. This movie only goes to prove that writing is everything. The writing in this movie is abysmal, and the movie is terrible, by extension. Even extremely talented actors like Robin William could not save this movie. And, if Robin Williams couldn't save your movie, then you can get a pretty good idea of what sort of movie you have made. The premise seems intriguing, but it's all downhill from here. The movie is super boring. The poor writing is made worse by its poor execution, and because of these reasons, you have to trudge through this movie. This movie couldn't end fast enough. The ending is also highly disappointing, which is the microcosm of the movie as a whole.
Failure to Launch
Failure to Launch is a romantic comedy movie starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker. Jessica Parker is one of the ugliest woman on the earth, let alone in Hollywood. How did she break into Hollywood is absolutely mind-boggling to me. This is the same as someone who can barely walk qualifying for the Olympics. Also, she was 40 when this movie was shot. Which would mean that she has hit the wall and her looks are significantly faded, which was not much in the first place. After hitting the wall, even a miss universe doesn't look near how she did in her 20s, then what can you say about "Ms. Horseface" here. Also, Am I supposed to believe that Matthew McConaughey falls in love with this hideous woman(ostensibly)? This is even too far for a movie. If it were a fantasy movie and were set in a different world, then maybe I would have believed it. Love makes you do stupid things but not retarded things.
Senior Year
Senior Year is a teen drama movie starring Rebel Wilson and Alicia Silverstone. This is a really, really bad movie. It fails on multiple fronts. But first, let's talk about lighting and cinematography. The cinematography and lighting are horrible in this movie; even Clueless looked better than this movie, and clueless was 25 years ago. Speaking of Clueless, Alicia Silverstone is in this movie, and my God, she looks old. This is yet another example of women aging like milk. If we compare her to Clueless, it is a night and day difference.
The writing in this movie is pretty bad too. The direction is horrible. The story meanders instead of going in a specific direction. Also, it is so boring and tedious. It is a chore to watch this movie. It is boring through & through. The ending is the worst part of this trainwreck of a movie. It pisses you off even more after the horrendous ending. Nothing in this movie is worthwhile. This movie has no redeeming qualities.
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is a rom-com movie starring Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, and Emma Stone. The movie is inspired by "The Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. McConaughey plays a playboy named Connor Mead here as he does. This is supposed to be a redemption story about a womanizer who transforms himself and finds true love or something like that. I agree that you cannot womanize your whole life, it will get boring and empty after a while, but that doesn't mean womanizing is bad or immoral. And Also, Am I supposed to believe that McConaughey leaves womanizing for someone who looks like Jennifer Garner? What? What? This is like giving away your iPhone for a keypad phone. If you are going to go, go in style.
This movie only goes to prove the blue-pilled worldview of the writers. They don't understand inter-sexual dynamics one bit. The writers of this movie have also written The Hangover series, so understand what we are dealing with here. They not only don't understand how men and women work but also can't write. They can only write bottom-of-the-barrel stuff, which appeals to the lowest common denominator.
The Other Woman
The Other Woman is a comedy movie allegedly, but I am not so sure about it; what I am sure about is that this is undoubtedly one of the worst movies I have ever watched. Cameron Diaz is in this movie, and she looks ancient. Women do really age like milk. Diaz was a hard 10 back in the day, but in this movie, she looks like 5 or 6, maybe. Also, Kate Upton is in this movie, and she is a supermodel. I don't understand how? Kate Upton is the very definition of a butterface. How can she be a supermodel with that face? And also, she cannot act to save her life. She was cast for her looks, but she doesn't look that good to be the eye candy of a movie, especially when the other two leads are Diaz and Mann.
This movie felt like the writer was working through her issues through writing. It seemed like she was hurt by someone, and the script was her therapy. It can definitely be the case cause the writer is one hideous woman. This movie is another testament to the stereotype that women can only write revenge fantasies. This movie is marketed under the veil of comedy, but this is actually a revenge fantasy movie. It is more of a horror movie than a comedy movie. At no point in this movie did I laugh or even came close to laughing. Instead, I was frustrated and pissed off for the bulk of the movie. The characters of the movie are driven by malice & spite. They use underhanded and sneaky tactics to avenge. The characters eventually cross over from revenge to vindication and sadism. The punishment doesn't fit the crime. The lead characters show absolutely disgusting behavior. This movie is pointless and toxic. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
Zoolander
Zoolander is a comedy movie starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. This is supposed to be a satire of the fashion industry or something; I don't know. I didn't get it. To me, It felt like some retarded person wrote this movie. I just couldn't stomach this movie. It's well past the point of cringe and entered the realm of retardation. The tagline of this movie should be l, " By Retards and For Retards " and "Welcome To Retardland. "
Bullet Train
Bullet Train is an action comedy movie starring Brad Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Joey King. This is a fantastic movie. Super fun and Interesting. One of the indicators of any great movie is how quotable a movie is. Arnold Schwarzenegger's movies are case in point. One of the primary reasons behind his many successful films is that they are very quotable. This movie also has some great quotable lines. The director of this movie was also the director of John Wick, so it's pointless to say that the action is top-notch. The choreography is also exceptional. The story is original and unique. The style of storytelling in this movie is pretty special and distinctive. Quick flashbacks are used for exposition, and also, there is a lot of fast editing and cuts used. It is told very artfully. This doesn't have any dull moments. It is fast-paced all the way through. During the last scene, Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock make surprise appearances, which is fantastic, especially Sandra Bullock. However, Bullock is in a big chunk of the movie, but only her voice is played. She plays the handler of Pitt's character, and he talks with her throughout the movie, but she doesn't come on screen till the very last scene.
Meet the Parents
Meet the Parents is a comedy movie starring Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, and Owen Wilson. This movie is among the most popular movies of this century. Also, it is an excellent and funny movie. The cat scene was hilarious. Stiller plays the unlucky loser, and he is pretty good at it cause he has played it many times. His casting was a good decision. The casting, in general, is excellent in the movie, especially De Niro. The film starts pretty dull but picks up pace quickly and keeps going until the end. The writing is brilliant in this movie. The cinematography is also great. Overall, it is a hilarious laugh out loud funny movie.
That's My Boy
That's My Boy is an Adam Sandler movie co-starring Andy Samberg. I said it is an Adam Sandler movie cause it follows the standard formula of Sandler movies which consists of lowbrow comedy with sex jokes and vulgar language. Anyway, It starts off on a high note with a sex scene and shows the dream of every high school student to bang his teacher. But it's all downhill from there. One different thing about this movie compared to other Sandler movies is that Adam Sandler is not the punching bag in this movie, but here Andy Samberg is the punching movie of this movie. He is the butt of most of the jokes. Overall, it is not that bad; it has some redeeming qualities, like the budding relationship between Sandler and Sanberg. Also, some of the jokes were funny. But, it is not so good that I would recommend it to someone.
Grown Ups
Grown Ups is a comedy movie starring Anlam Sandler, Kevin James, and Rob Schnider. Even though the movie is called Grown Ups, it is not made for grown-ups. It is made for 10-year-old children. It is for low-IQ people. This type of comedy is bottom of the barrel and appeals to the lowest common denominator. The absolute lack of effort in this movie is mind-boggling. The writing is so lazy, so uncreative, it's unbelievable. Even the actors were just phoning it in. They didn't put any effort or thought into their acting. Just because your movie features big shots of Hollywood, it doesn't mean you don't have to write a good script. It's like the studio said, let's not spend on writing 'cause we have big movie stars, people will see it anyway. This movie is an insult to the audience's intelligence. It is similar to getting invited to a feast and getting served half-cooked stale food. Just like it is offensive and wrong to serve overcooked food to a guest, Similarly, it is insulting and inappropriate to make a movie with no effort after raising people's hope by casting big names.
Tower Heist
Tower Heist is a crime comedy movie starring Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, and Casey Affleck. You can deduce by the title that this is a heist movie in which the lead actors steal from the Penthouse (A Tower). This is one of those low-effort mediocre movies with big names on the poster that release every year. The only reason these movies are financed is cause it has a lot of big stars in them and not because of the story or the writing. Either they think, why bother with the story if people are going to come anyways due to the star-studded cast, or maybe they spend all their money on the cast, so they don't have the money for the writers, so they hire an ordinary writer. I have noticed that most movies with a star-studded cast are pretty average, and their screenplay is terrible. I have seen this pattern not only in Hollywood but also in South Indian industries.
Ocean's Trilogy
Ocean Trilogy is a movie franchise starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, and Casey Affleck. The Ocean's Franchise is one of the most successful and most popular franchises of all time, and rightly so. This franchise has a star-studded cast, but still, it doesn't drop the ball, which is the norm. Also, the actors seem to have great chemistry. It seemed like they get along with ease which adds on to the charm of the movie. The writing throughout the franchise stays pretty good. Although it seems to worsen a little bit with every movie but overall it maintains an acceptable level of quality. If I have to describe the Ocean's franchise in one word then I would describe it as "fun."The franchise is all about a bunch of guys getting together to complete a seemingly impossible mission. Everyone must bring their A-game to succeed, and they do bring that and that's how they eventually succeed; the story of humanity. Also, there is a lot of planning, strategizing, and improvising shown in these movies, making them even more appealing. The stakes stay extremely high throughout the franchise, maintaining intrigue throughout the movie. At no point in the series does it feel tedious or uninteresting. The script is competently written and then excellently executed by the director and the whole cast.
Ocean's 8
Ocean's 8 is a heist action movie starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihana, and Anne Hathway. It is, of course, a Girl Version of the successful Ocean's franchise. The only difference between the original trilogy and this movie is that it is mediocre and trash. The movie has a star-studded cast, but most actors are washed-up actresses long past their prime. So they no longer have the appeal they once had. Also, The story is pretty bad, and so is the writing. The direction is completely off, and so is the cinematography. The lighting could have been much better—the dialogue was stale and boring. The characters were uninteresting and shallow, meaning they were poorly constructed and thought out. The movie is mediocre in every regard.
Rush Hour Franchise
Rush hour is a buddy cop action movie series starring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. The whole franchise is full of tropes and clichés; I mean, it's ridiculous. You got the odd couple. Chris Tucker plays the law-breaking, loudmouth cartoon character, while Jackie Chan plays the straight-laced, rule-following, silent, and by-the-book character. Their personalities are at odds with each other, so conflict ensues, and this polarity makes way for many comedy scenes. Both are always arguing and squabbling with each other. The charm of the movie lies in the chemistry between Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. Overall, it is a fairly watchable series.
