Bloodsport Review

Bloodsport is genuinely one of the worst movies ever released. This movie is atrocious. 

1. Dialogue

The dialogue was awful and unremarkable. I don't even remember a single line of dialogue from this movie, which is supposed to be a violent martial arts movie. Don't they know that even friends bust each other's balls, so why won't enemies will do the same? There was no trash talking, no back and forth or banter, not even one punchy dialogue.

2. Cinematography

The cinematography was one of the rare things about this movie that was good. It looked like an 80s action movie. The lighting was also good.

3. Acting 

Acting is pretty bad, embarrassingly bad. Jean Claude Van Damme is the worst actor. Granted that he has a thick accent, but so did Arnold, and he became highest paid actor with that accent. Van Damme was not even trying, which was disappointing. Other actors also did a terrible job. They seemed like their friend forced them to act in a play, and they were phoning it in, waiting for it to end. I haven't seen worse acting than this movie. The movie was awkward and clumsy. It felt like autistics have made this garbage movie.

4. Writing

The writing was not that bad for an action movie, especially a low-budget one. Writing is decent cause the bar for good writing in an action movie is too low. But I feel like they should have done better on this aspect. I understand that excellent cinematography, bigshot actors, massive set pieces, and beautiful locations need a big budget, but writing doesn't need a big budget, you only need skill and effort, and your movie becomes far better without spending enormous sums of money. They could have done a far better job, but they squandered it. 

5. Characters

Characters were one-dimensional and paper-thin, just like any action flick. Van Damme's character could have been more fleshed out since it is a biopic movie. The second most crucial character in this movie is the friend of Van Damme, and he is the worst character I have ever seen. His lines are so bad I couldn't believe that they really put that dialogue in a movie. He might as well be a cartoon character, but not in a good way. It would have been extremely better, if they had not included this cartoon in this movie. The lead actress was the worst actress I have ever seen. The villain was also extremely bad, but not that bad compared to other characters. 

6. Music

The Film Score was terrible. It was trite and uninteresting. I didn't feel any emotion hearing that godawful score. The music should make me feel pumped up and make me invested in the characters, but it didn't do any of these things. 

In fact, I rarely noticed the film score. It was played on a low volume. But it was supposed to be loud and hard-hitting, It is an action movie. 

7. Editing

The editing was decent enough. It was not jarring, but it also was not great. Even the training montage scene was poorly timed. It was shown too soon. I didn't even know the character, so how was I supposed to care about his training? The training scene should be in the second act. Also, Training montages are the highlights of a movie, so they should be punchy, memorable, and epic. But, It was edited very clumsily. There were also some filler scenes to help the movie clock in 90 minutes, so that it would be called a feature film.

8. Pacing

The pacing was not good. It clocks in around 90 minutes, and you feel every minute of it. Even though it's not very long, it feels as though things Ares happening slowly, and this is a 2-hour movie. They could have given more time to Van Damme's origin story, which would have made the audience invest in the character, so they would have cared about the rest of the movie. The pacing was too slow, and things were happening too slowly.

9. Choreography 

The choreography was the worst aspect of this movie. This was the worst choreography that I have ever seen. I could forgive cardboard cutout characters, slow pacing, and lousy editing but what I cannot forgive is terrible action scenes in an action movie. If they had done an excellent job in this area, it might have been a half-decent movie.
